How to Find Band Members in Fukuoka — Complete Guide to the Tenjin, Daimyo, and Oyako-koh Street Music Scenes

2026/03/29

I Have No Memories of Fukuoka. But I Have Deep Respect for "Mentai Rock"

Fukuoka cityscape
Fukuoka, Kyushu's largest city. A unique musical culture has taken root, centered around the Tenjin and Daimyo areas.

To be honest, I have no experience playing in a band in Fukuoka.

But my respect for Fukuoka's music scene runs deep. In the late 1970s, mentai rock was born from Tenjin's "Oyako-koh Street" — bands like Sun House, Sheena & the Rokkets, THE MODS, and The Roosters. I'm of a generation that witnessed firsthand the impact they made when they charged into Tokyo. That raw, fierce energy still flows through the roots of Fukuoka's music scene today.

It's fair to say Fukuoka is "one of the birthplaces of Japanese rock." If you're looking for band members in such a city, this article should prove useful.

5 Ways to Find Band Members in Fukuoka

Hand searching on smartphone
With member recruitment sites, you can filter by genre, activity area, and instrument

1. Use Member Recruitment Sites

First, I'd recommend trying Membo's member recruitment page. You can filter by genre, area, and instrument to find musicians active in Fukuoka. With support for 8 languages, you can also connect with foreign musicians living in Fukuoka.

For a detailed comparison of member recruitment sites, see 5 Common Traits of People Who Can't Find Band Members and Solutions.

2. Attend Live Houses

Fukuoka's live houses are concentrated in the Tenjin and Maizuru areas. Rather than just watching the bands perform, the most natural way to meet people is to talk with members from other bands on the same bill. Since the days of mentai rock, Fukuoka musicians have been finding members through bill-mate connections.

3. Visit Session Bars

Fukuoka has several jazz and blues-oriented session bars. By attending jam sessions where you can participate as a drop-in, you'll meet musicians across genres. Venues like Gate's 7 and Cavern Beat regularly host session nights.

4. Check Practice Studio Bulletin Boards

Many practice studios in the Tenjin area have member recruitment notices posted. See How to Choose a Practice Studio for more information.

5. Participate in Live Circuit Events

Fukuoka regularly hosts live circuit events like "TENJIN ONTAQ." These events allow you to visit multiple live houses in the Tenjin area in one night, giving you the chance to meet many bands at once.

Today's Oyako-koh Street — Mentai Rock's Birthplace Has Shifted Its Focus to Daimyo and Yakuin

Night scene of busy street alley
In the 1970s, Japanese rock history was set in motion from this street. Today, that memory lingers behind the bustle of the main thoroughfare.

Anyone who gets passionate hearing "Oyako-koh Street" is probably in their 50s or older. In the late 1970s, the area around "Oyako-koh Street" in Tenjin (now officially written as "Oyafukoh Street") was packed with small rock venues that served as the source of mentai rock. Bands like Sun House, Sheena & the Rokkets, THE MODS, and The Roosters honed their craft at venues in this area before expanding to Tokyo.

However, today's Oyafukoh Street is no longer the center of the music scene. Since the 1990s, most live house functions have shifted to the Daimyo area (around Nishi-dori). Daimyo venues like Queblick and ROOMS have become the main battleground for Fukuoka rock, and since the 2000s, the Yakuin and Kiyokawa areas (BEAT STATION, Utero) have also risen to prominence.

In other words, Oyafukoh Street remains the "spiritual sacred ground" of mentai rock, but as an active music venue, Daimyo, Yakuin, and Kiyokawa are now the main centers. If you're starting a band in Fukuoka, it's practical to first check out several venues in the Daimyo area. Still, breathing the air of Oyafukoh Street at least once will connect you to the roots of Fukuoka rock. Understanding this history will deepen conversations with bill-mates.

Places for Jam Sessions

Practical Guide to Jam Session Participation for Beginners

For beginners who find jam sessions intimidating, I've compiled the actual flow and necessary preparations. Fukuoka's session venues are generally open to beginners.

Required Equipment and Instruments

  • Guitar/Bass: Bring your own instrument. Don't forget your cable (though most venues have them on hand)
  • Drums: Use the venue's kit as standard. Bring your own sticks
  • Keyboard: Use the venue's keyboard as standard. If bringing your own, confirm with the venue beforehand
  • Vocals: Use the venue's microphone. Know the keys of the songs you want to sing in advance

Flow on the Day

  1. Arrival/Check-in: Arrive 30 minutes before opening or by start time. Tell the host musician "This is my first time," and they'll guide you through the flow
  2. Waiting/Observing: Listen to the first few songs from the host band. Observe the vibe, genre, and skill level
  3. You Get Called Up: The host will call out "Anyone want to play next?" or "Need a bass player?" Raise your hand—that's the key moment
  4. Perform (2-3 songs): One set is 2-3 songs. Standard numbers are common, so memorize several beforehand
  5. Switch/Mingle: After performing, chat with other participants at the bar. This is your chance to find members

Cost Estimate

Venue Type Charge/Admission 1 Drink
Jazz Session Bar (Gate's 7, etc.) 2,000-3,000 yen Included or separate 600-800 yen
Rock/Beatles-style (Cavern Beat, etc.) 1,500-2,500 yen Included or separate 600-800 yen
Live House Combined (PEACE, etc.) 1,500-2,000 yen Separate 600 yen and up

Skill Level Guide

Gate's 7 and Cavern Beat have participants ranging from their 20s to 70s and provide a comfortable atmosphere for beginners. Jazz venues, on the other hand, are improvisation-based, so you'll need at least basic knowledge of chord progressions and scales. Rock and pop session venues let you participate fully as a beginner if you memorize the set list (10-20 standard songs) in advance.

If you're nervous about performing right away, it's fine to just observe at first. Attending several times to get a feel for the atmosphere before raising your hand is also welcomed. See also Jam Session Beginner's Guide (National Edition) for insight into how session culture differs across Japan.

Fukuoka Artists — "Mentai Rock" Sacred Ground

Musician playing electric guitar
In the 1970s, mentai rock was born from around Tenjin's "Oyako-koh Street." Its spirit lives on in Fukuoka today.

Fukuoka is called "one of the birthplaces of Japanese rock" because of mentai rock. In the late 1970s, around Tenjin's "Oyako-koh Street," venues rapidly produced raw, passionate rock bands that went on to expand into Tokyo. This legacy continues today.

Kazuo Zaitsu / Tulip Fukuoka City "Journey of the Heart," "Shadow of Youth." Formed at Seinan Gakuin University
Kai Band Fukuoka City "HERO," "Anna." Hakata-born rock band
THE MODS Fukuoka City "Violent Rain." Exemplary mentai rock band

Beyond these, Masumune Kusano (Spitz) is from Sawara Ward, Fukuoka City; Ayumi Hamasaki is from Fukuoka City; and YUI is from Koga City. Fukuoka has contributed a surprising number of talents to Japan's music scene.

The spirit of mentai rock—that rebellious determination not to lose to Tokyo—still flows through Fukuoka's band scene today. The experience of forming a band in this atmosphere is something you can't get anywhere else.

Band Scenes in Other Kyushu Cities — Expanding from Fukuoka to Kitakyushu, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima

When you can't find members in Fukuoka alone, expanding your search to other Kyushu cities opens up many more options. Particularly Kitakyushu, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima are within day-trip or one-night-stay distance from Fukuoka.

Kitakyushu — Hometown of Sheena & the Rokkets and The Roosters

Kitakyushu City (Kokura, Yawata, Moji) is where the hard-edged lineage of mentai rock developed. This city produced Sheena & the Rokkets (from Moji) and The Roosters (originally from Kurume, later Kitakyushu), and it still hosts rock-heavy venues today. From Fukuoka, it's about 20 minutes by bullet train or about an hour by conventional train. If you can't find members in specific genres in Fukuoka (old-school, punk, hard rock), Kitakyushu's live houses are hidden gems.

Kumamoto — Unique Scene Centered on Django

Centered around the live house "Django," Kumamoto has developed its own pop and alternative rock band scene. From Fukuoka, it's about 40 minutes by bullet train or about 2 hours by highway bus. If you're looking for genres slightly different from Fukuoka's rock and punk mainstream, Kumamoto offers unexpected discoveries. For details, see How to Find Band Members in Kumamoto.

Kagoshima — Southern Stronghold Centered on CAPARVO HALL

Kagoshima's CAPARVO HALL supports the rock scene throughout southern Kyushu. From Fukuoka, it's about 1 hour 30 minutes by bullet train. While the distance is greater, Kagoshima bands often tour to Fukuoka, so you'll get to know them by watching live shows and bill-sharing events in Fukuoka.

Traveling Within Kyushu Tips

  • Kyushu Shinkansen: Hakata to Kumamoto 40 minutes, Hakata to Kagoshima Chuo 1 hour 20 minutes
  • Highway Bus: Hakata to Kumamoto 2 hours (around 2,000 yen one-way), Hakata to Nagasaki 2.5 hours
  • Practice Studio Rates: Kitakyushu and Kumamoto studios are another 20% cheaper than Fukuoka

"Not limiting yourself to Fukuoka alone" is the key to enjoying the depth of the Kyushu band scene.

Summary — Finding Bandmates in the Sacred Ground of Mentai Rock

Live audience
Fukuoka's music scene has a unique atmosphere where rebellious spirit and human warmth coexist.

I have no memories of Fukuoka. Yet, writing this article, I've come to truly respect Fukuoka's music scene all over again. The 1,000-person heat at DRUM LOGOS, the air of Oyako-koh Street, that rebellious determination not to lose to Tokyo. If I, at 60, were to form a band in Fukuoka right now, I'm sure it would turn out to be something amazing.
