1. Conclusion first: There are three ways to be notified of new messages. The only notifications you will receive are for messages and search matches.

After contacting a band looking for members, the biggest concern is whether or not you've received a reply. However, you can't keep the app open all day. That's where notification features come in handy.

Membo has a feature that notifies you of new messages and new job postings that match your saved search criteria. This article explains how to receive these notifications and how to turn them on and off, following the names that appear on the screen. How to use the messages themselves is covered in the sixth article in this series, "How to Use Messages ." This article is a continuation of that.

Let me start by stating the conclusion.

There are three ways to be notified: a red dot and badge on the screen, browser push notifications, and email notifications for new messages. The notifications you actually receive are limited to two topics: new messages (email and push) and search matches (push). Updates to your favorites, general new postings, and updates to the announcements page are not currently notified.

There's one more important point. The "Message Notifications" setting can be toggled on and off at any time, even for those who don't use push notifications. Turning it off will stop both email notifications for new messages and push notifications. Conversely, "Search Match Notifications" can only be selected when push notifications are enabled.

This article is based on the design and text displayed on the Membo screen, as well as information gathered from the publicly available guidance pages. It is not a record of receiving and verifying notifications on individual computers and smartphones. Information that was not verified is summarized in the later sections.

First, here is a quick reference guide for the whole group.

Things I want to do Is it possible?
Open the app and notice new messages Yes (indicated by a red dot and an unread badge)
Even when the app is closed, you can be notified via browser push notifications. Yes (when notifications are allowed and turned on in settings)
Receive new messages via email. Yes (when "Message notifications" is turned on)
The full message will appear in the notification. It doesn't appear in emails. Push notifications show the beginning of the message.
Reply to email notifications Cannot be done (send only)
Receive notifications about updates to your favorites and general new job postings. I can't do it now.
Choose to turn notifications on or off for each type. Yes, it is possible (two types: "message notifications" and "search match notifications").

2. Let's look at the three methods side by side.

The three methods for noticing new arrivals each have different strengths and weaknesses. Let's start by listing their characteristics.

method Where do you notice? preparation Suitable situations
Red dot and unread badge Inside the app You just need to be logged in. To avoid overlooking it when opening the app
Push notifications Device notifications Allow browser notifications and turn them on in the settings. I want to know when the app is not open.
email Email inbox "Message notifications" must be turned on (it is on by default). People who check their emails frequently

You don't have to choose just one; you can use them in combination. For example, it's natural to receive an email notification saying "something has arrived," open the app, and start a conversation from the red dot. Conversely, if you feel there are too many notifications, you can disable some and use only the red dots if that's sufficient.

Please note that the unread notification feature does not work for guests (those who are not registered or logged in). Registration and login are required to receive notifications. For information on what can be used without registration, please refer to the fourth article in this series , which summarizes what can be done without registration .

3. Indicators on the screen: red dot and unread badge

The most basic indicator is the one that appears on the Membo screen. It will appear as long as you're logged in, even if you haven't touched any notification settings.

  • The red dot on the "My Page" icon in the footer : This appears when there is one or more unread messages in total.
  • The red dot in the "Messages" tab on your My Page : This also appears when you have unread messages.
  • If the number of unread messages in each line of the conversation list exceeds 99, it will display "99+".
  • Unread message displayed on the "Message to Post" button in the job posting details : When there are unread messages in the conversation associated with that job posting.

The red dots represent the combined number of unread messages in both direct conversations and conversations linked to posts. The red dots in the footer will appear the same regardless of which type of conversation the message is in.

The order in which to view them is simple. If you see a red dot next to "My Page" in the footer, open My Page. There is also a red dot next to the "Messages" tab, so open that tab as well. In the list, start reading from the row with the number badge. How to view the conversation list is explained in detail in the "How to View the Message List" section of the article on how to use messages .

4. When the markers are updated

The red dots don't automatically update at regular intervals while the screen is open. Based on the screen's design, it seems to re-check the number of unread messages at specific points in time.

  1. When you open the app : After opening it and waiting a short while, the number of unread messages will be reflected.
  2. When you click the footer icon
  3. When I opened my page
  4. After sending the message

In other words, if you leave the app open for a while, the red dot may remain outdated. If you think, "There should be new messages, but there's no red dot," try reopening the app or tapping the icon in the footer. This will update the count to the latest one.

It's different when you have the conversation screen open. While the conversation screen is open, you'll automatically receive replies from the other person. This behavior was explained in the article on how to use messaging .

5. Open notification settings: Directions from My Page

Now, let's move on to notification settings. Here's how to access the settings screen:

  1. Open "My Page" in the footer at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Select "Profile" from the tabs at the top.
  3. In the "Account Settings" list, tap "Notifications" (a small icon indicating on or off will appear on the right).
  4. A modal titled "Notification Settings" opens.

These directions are based on reading the screen layout; they are not based on actual testing on a device. The screen layout may change with app updates. If you can't find it, try looking for the heading "Account Settings" in "My Page".

The icon to the right of the "Notifications" row indicates the status of push notifications. It will show "OFF" if you are not receiving notifications, have not allowed them, or are not subscribed to them, and "ON" if you have allowed and subscribed to notifications and the setting is turned on. It's important to note that this icon does not indicate whether email notifications are on or off. You may still receive email notifications even if the icon is "OFF".

Detailed instructions can also be found on the Membo push notification usage page . Please compare it with this article.

6. Items found on the "Notification Settings" screen

The "Notification Settings" modal contains the following components:

parts What to do When will it come out?
"Current Status" Displays browser permissions (allowed, blocked, not set) and subscription status (subscribed, not subscribed). everytime
"Allow notifications" button The browser will ask for permission to send notifications. When permission is "not set"
Toggle "Web Notifications" Turn push notifications on or off. The explanation is "Receive messages in your browser". When permission is "Allowed"
Check the "Notification Categories" Turning notifications on and off by type everytime
Blocking warning "Browser notifications are blocked. Please allow notifications in your browser settings." When permission is "blocked"

The on-screen text reads, "Enable notifications to receive new messages and updates." The term "updates" here is merely a wording on the screen. The actual scope of notifications you will receive will be explained in a later chapter.

At the bottom of the screen, there's a note that says, "App notification settings will be available after the app release." This suggests that the current notification settings are for Membo used in a browser, and that notification settings for the app are not yet available.

7. "Message notifications" and "Search match notifications"

There are only two checkboxes in the "Notification Categories" section. These are the only two types of notifications.

name Screen description range of effect Selectable conditions
Message notifications New messages will be notified via email and push notifications (turning this off will stop both). Both email and push notifications You can turn push notifications on or off at any time, even if you don't use them.
"Search Match Notifications" Get notified when there are new posts that match your saved search criteria. Push notifications only This option is only available when push notifications are enabled.

Both are enabled by default.

"Message notifications": Works for both email and push notifications.

The "Message Notifications" feature will notify you of new messages via email and push notifications. Turning it off will stop both. If you only want email notifications and don't need push notifications, leave "Message Notifications" on and turn off "Web Notifications" (or simply don't allow browser notifications). If you don't want email or push notifications, turn off "Message Notifications."

In other words, the combinations are as follows:

Message notifications "Web Notifications" email Push notifications
on On (permission and subscription granted) reach reach
on Off, or not permitted reach Unreachable
off Either way Unreachable Unreachable

"Search Match Notifications": Postings that match your saved search criteria.

"Search Match Notifications" will send you a push notification when a new job posting matches your saved search criteria. The notification title will display the name of your saved search criteria. The body of the notification will display the title of the found job posting (it will be truncated if it is too long).

These notifications arrive in batches at regular intervals, matching entries as they are received. They won't arrive the moment a job posting is made. It's best to expect a slight delay before receiving them to avoid disappointment. These notifications are only available if push notifications are enabled, and will not be sent via email.

The first article in this series, "How to Find Band Members," will give you some ideas on how to decide on your search criteria. If your criteria don't match, you won't receive any notifications, or you'll only receive notifications for jobs that don't suit you.

8. Steps to enable push notifications

To receive push notifications, you need both browser permission and Membo settings. Here are the steps.

  1. Opens the "Notification Settings" modal.
  2. If the browser permission is set to "Not set" under "Current status," click "Allow notifications."
  3. A browser permission dialog will appear, so select "Allow".
  4. Once permission is "Allowed", a "Web Notifications" toggle will appear. Turn this on.
  5. In "Notification Categories," check the types of notifications you want to receive.

Turning on the "Web Notifications" toggle will start the subscription in your browser. Turning it off will cancel the subscription. At that time, the master switch for push notifications will be turned off, and both "Message Notifications" and "Search Match Notifications" will stop (email will not be affected).

If you have blocked browser permissions, you cannot revert to permission from the Membo screen. The screen will display a message saying, "Please change the setting to 'Allow' for notifications from this site in your browser settings. For iOS: Settings > Safari > Notifications." Open your browser settings and change the setting to allow notifications from this site. How to open browser settings varies depending on the browser. For example, for Chrome, refer to the notification information in Chrome Help , and for Firefox, refer to the help information on push notifications in Firefox .

According to Membo 's instructions on how to use push notifications , they can be received on computers using Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.

In a scene bathed in the setting sun, a person dressed in dark clothing holds a smartphone in a dark, carbon-fiber-patterned case, their hands clasped together. The rear camera of the device faces forward, and the background is blurred to a light beige.
You can review your notification settings anytime on your device. Once you've set them up initially, it's hassle-free afterward.

9. On iPhone, after adding it to the home screen...

The situation is slightly different for iPhones and iPads. The Membo push notification usage page states, "PWA installation is required, especially on iPhones/iPads." It instructs users to add Membo to their home screen via Safari on iPhones running iOS 16.4 or later.

In other words, simply opening a website in Safari may not guarantee you receive push notifications. The process involves adding the site to your home screen, opening it from the icon, and then requesting permission for notifications. Instructions on how to add a site to your home screen are provided on the Membo app installation page , tailored to your specific device. Generally, it's as follows:

terminal How to add to the home screen
iPhone Open in Safari, select "Add to Home Screen" from the share button (square with upward arrow), and press "Add".
Android From the three-dot menu in Chrome, select "Install app" (or "Add to home screen") and press "Install".
PC Click the "Install" icon on the far right of the address bar in Chrome or Edge.

The requirement of iOS 16.4 or later is stated on the publicly available instructions page. This article does not verify Apple's specifications. If you are not receiving notifications on your iPhone, first check if you are opening it from the Membo home screen icon.

10. What will appear in the push notification?

The following will appear in push notifications for new messages:

If the screen's display language is not Japanese, the message will appear in that language. For example, in English, it will say "You have a message from 〇〇".

The main difference between push notifications and email is that push notifications display the beginning of the message. If you have notifications set to appear on your lock screen, others around you might see them. If you often use your device in public, it's a good idea to check the lock screen notification settings on your device. These settings are located on the device or browser side and cannot be changed from the Membo screen.

Push notifications are received in browsers where notifications are allowed. If you want to receive them on other browsers or devices, open the "Notification Settings" on those devices as well and allow notifications.

11. Email notifications for new messages

New message email notifications became available from November 2026. This is a convenient method for people who don't use push notifications or who check their email frequently.

What kind of email will I receive?

The email will look like this:

The message body contains the sentence, "The content of the message is not included in this email. Please check Membo ." The content is meant to be read within the app. Clicking the link opens the Membo entry page. It does not take you directly to a specific conversation screen. After opening, you find the conversation from the "Messages" tab on your My Page.

The conversations covered include both "Message to Post" (conversations that led to recruitment) and direct messages.

When will it arrive? "The first new item after the last check."

You won't receive an email every time there's a new message. The email body also states, "This email is only sent when there's a new message for the first time since you last checked your messages."

In other words, even if someone sends you multiple messages in quick succession, you won't receive an email for each one. You'll only receive an email when you open the conversation, check the previous messages, and the first new message arrives. The system is also designed to space out messages so that the same person doesn't receive multiple messages in a short period of time.

This design has its advantages for the recipient. Even if the conversation is lively and many messages are exchanged, the email inbox won't be flooded with notifications. On the other hand, it's important to note that if you leave the app untouched after receiving one email, you won't receive any more emails. You can't assume that there are no new messages just because you haven't received any.

Email language

The email language will be selected from Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, and Korean, according to the language you have registered. Those who have registered any other language will receive emails in English.

In a live music venue shrouded in red light and smoke, a black silhouette of an audience member holds a smartphone horizontally, filming the stage. The screen shows the stage lights faintly, and in the background, the silhouette of a musician holding a guitar can be seen.
Even amidst the excitement of a live concert, your device becomes a small window. You don't want to miss any important messages.

12. When you want to stop notifications

If you feel you're receiving too many notifications, or if you simply don't want emails anymore, the method for stopping them varies depending on what you want to stop.

Things I want to stop Things to do
New messages via email, push notifications, everything Uncheck "Message notifications" in "Notification settings".
Push notifications only (keep email notifications). Turn off the "Web notifications" toggle.
Only push notifications for search matches Uncheck "Search Match Notifications"
Completely disable notifications from the device's browser. Block notifications from this site in your browser settings.

Message notifications can be turned on and off at any time, even if you're not using push notifications. The email body also includes instructions saying, "If you want to stop notifications, please turn off message notifications from the notification settings on My Page." In browsers that don't support notifications, a message saying "This browser does not support notifications" will appear at the top of the notification settings screen, but you can still toggle message notifications in that case as well.

Even if you turn off notifications, the red dot and badge in the app will still be visible. Even if you turn off all notifications, you can still see unread messages by opening the app. Notifications are simply a means of "knowing things outside the app."

Even with message notifications turned off, messages themselves will still arrive as usual. They will appear correctly in the conversation screen and in the list. You just won't receive notifications. If you leave notifications off during an important exchange, you may miss replies late. For more information on how communication can break down, see the articles on communication breakdowns, withdrawals, and non-attendance on the day .

13. Where does tapping a notification open?

When you tap a push notification, Membo opens. According to the Membo push notification usage page , the destination that opens depends on the type of notification.

If you click the notification button while not logged in, you will be directed to the desired screen after logging in.

As mentioned in the previous chapter, the link in the email will open the Membo login page. It will not take you directly to the conversation screen. Knowing that the destination differs depending on the type of notification will prevent confusion.

14. Notifications that are not currently being received

Let me first list the situations in which I think I might receive notifications. Based on my examination of the screen layout and the notification sending process, the following notifications are not currently being received.

Easy-to-expect notifications current situation
People you've added to your favorites and their updated posts I don't receive notifications (I have to check them myself).
General notification that a new job posting has been made. I don't receive notifications. However, I do receive "search match notifications" for new items that match my saved search criteria.
News Updates I don't receive notifications. I have to go and check the news page myself.
Notification of submissions and bookmarks It doesn't arrive (I only get a message notification when it arrives as a message).

My favorite ways to use it are in the second article in this series, "My Favorite Ways to Use It ." There's no system yet to notify me of updates, so I'll have to check for interesting posts and people myself from time to time.

The confirmation email you receive when registering and the email you receive when resetting your password are separate from new message notifications. You will only receive them when you perform a registration or password reset operation.

Your profile also has a setting for a "newsletter" that will let you receive notifications about new features and music-related information via email. However, this is a separate matter from notifications. I haven't actually checked when it arrives, so I won't go into detail in this article.

15. How to check if you haven't received a notification

If you're not receiving notifications, checking the following points in order will help you find the cause. We've created a checklist by combining the items listed on the Membo push notification usage page with the information organized in this article.

When push notifications are not being received

  1. Is "Web notifications" in "Notification settings" turned on? If it's off, you won't receive push notifications.
  2. Check whether the permission is "Allowed" under "Current Status". If it is "Blocked", change the setting to allow them in your browser settings.
  3. Is the "Notification Categories" checked ? If "Message Notifications" is turned off, you will not receive push notifications for messages.
  4. On iPhones and iPads, check if the app is added to the home screen and if you are opening it from the added icon.
  5. Is your device's "Do Not Disturb" or "Focus Assist" mode turned off ? If it's on, notifications may not be displayed.
  6. Have you verified this on the device where you allowed notifications ? If you're using a different device, you'll need to grant permission separately.

When you don't receive an email

  1. Is "Message Notifications" turned on? If it's off, you won't receive emails either.
  2. Check your spam folder : The sender is noreply@membo.info
  3. Did you open and check the conversation after the previous email ?: You will only receive an email for the first new message after you have previously checked it. You will not receive an email for new messages that you have not checked.
  4. Is the registered email address correct? If it's a different address, the email will be delivered to a different inbox.

If you still don't receive the message, don't rely solely on notifications; check the red dot in the app and the "Messages" tab on your My Page. Notifications are just a supplementary tool. For important communications, the list within the app is the most reliable.

If the problem persists, please also check the Membo help page .

16. Tips for dealing with notifications effectively

From here on, these are general tips that apply not only to Membo but to everyone. Notifications are convenient, but they can also be a source of distraction. Many people are involved in band activities alongside work or school. If you can arrange things in a way that suits your lifestyle, you'll be able to continue for a long time.

  1. Decide how many notifications you want to use beforehand : Start with all of them turned on. After a few days, turn off the ones you find annoying.
  2. Don't rush them for a reply : When you receive a notification, you might feel pressured to reply immediately. However, the other person often can't reply right away either. I wrote about the importance of not blaming them for a delayed reply in my article on messaging techniques.
  3. Turn off notifications at night : Using your device's "Do Not Disturb" mode will prevent you from being woken up by nighttime notifications.
  4. For periods when you don't want to miss anything, you can use them in combination : For example, you can turn on both email and push notifications while waiting for a response to your application.
  5. Review once things have calmed down : Once the exchange has settled down, review your notification settings and reduce them.

If you're on the receiving end of applications, having multiple notifications means you're less likely to miss anything, but it can also be difficult to adjust your mindset for each one. For guidance on how to approach applications, articles outlining how to select them can be helpful.

If you're the one receiving the invitation, it's better to calmly check the details before responding rather than rushing to reply when you receive the notification, as this will likely lead to fewer regrets. The article on what to check before responding when invited to join a band outlines the points you should confirm.

Having a well-organized profile provides others with information to read and judge you. The impression you make after receiving a notification is partly determined by your profile. How to write one is summarized in the third article in this series, "How to Create a Profile ." How to use the map to find studios and live venues is explained in the fifth article in this series , "How to Use the Map ."

17. Things not confirmed in this article

The information I've written so far is based on the screen layout, wording, and what I've read on the publicly available information pages. I haven't verified the following:

The information written here may change with app updates. Please check the news page , help page , or push notification usage page for the latest information.

18. Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Are notifications turned on by default?

The two "Notification Categories" ("Message Notifications" and "Search Match Notifications") are turned on by default. However, push notifications will not actually be received until you grant permission in your browser.

Q. I don't use push notifications, but can I switch off "message notifications"?
